Dark interiors are having a moment in KL. But most attempts end up looking like a cave — heavy, oppressive, and claustrophobic. The East57 project was Studio D3's proof that dark can be done beautifully, if you understand the rules.

East57 is a residential apartment building in the heart of KL. The client, a single professional in her 30s, had a clear brief: she didn't want a white box. She wanted drama. She wanted the apartment to feel like a boutique hotel — warm, intimate, considered. And she wanted it done without making the space feel smaller than it already was.

The Design Approach

The key to making dark interiors work in a compact KL apartment is controlled contrast. You can't just paint everything dark and hope for the best. You need light sources that punch, reflective surfaces that bounce, and careful material selection that adds depth without adding visual weight.

For this project, we used a deep charcoal for the feature wall and ceiling coves, paired with warm brass fixtures and a walnut timber veneer on the built-in wardrobe and TV console. The contrast between the dark walls and the warm timber created exactly the depth the client was after — without making the 650 sq ft apartment feel like a box.

The lighting plan was critical. We used a combination of recessed downlights on a dimmer system, warm-toned strip lighting inside the coves, and pendant lights over the dining table. At full brightness, the space feels modern and functional. Dimmed down, it transforms into something that feels genuinely luxurious.

The Kitchen

The kitchen was a particular challenge. In many dark-interior projects, the kitchen becomes an awkward exception — the rest of the home is moody and dramatic, but the kitchen has to be white for practical reasons.

Here, we used dark matte cabinetry in a forest green tone, with a white Calacatta quartz countertop for contrast. The backsplash used long, thin subway tiles in an off-white, laid in a running bond pattern. It kept the kitchen cohesive with the overall scheme while remaining practical and easy to clean.

The Result

The East57 apartment was completed in 10 weeks. The client called it "the apartment I always wanted to live in but didn't know how to ask for."

The lesson from this project: dark interiors aren't for everyone, but when they're done with intention and precision, they create spaces that feel genuinely special — not just different.
