The Wardrobe Doors That Kept Drifting Open: A Taman Miharja Story About Sliding Tracks and Level Installation

The built-in wardrobe in Grace's Taman Miharja bedroom had been fitted with three-panel sliding doors — a floor-to-ceiling arrangement in grey mirror glass with aluminium frames. The doors slid smoothly at handover and parked correctly in their closed positions. Grace used the wardrobe daily for five months before she noticed that the right panel had begun to drift slowly open on its own when she released it in the closed position — not dramatically, just a slow slide of 30–50mm over several minutes. A month later, the centre panel had developed the same tendency. Two months after that, all three panels drifted when released. She called the contractor.
The contractor came and adjusted the roller tension on each door panel — sliding wardrobe door rollers have a small adjustment screw that changes the grip on the track. The adjustment was done and the doors held their position for approximately six weeks. Then the drifting returned, progressively across all three panels again. The contractor adjusted the rollers again. The cycle repeated: adjust, six weeks of correct operation, drift resumes. After the third adjustment cycle, Grace asked the contractor to explain why the adjustment kept wearing off. The contractor said the rollers were degrading and recommended replacing all six rollers. A joinery specialist who inspected independently put a long spirit level along the full length of the top track and the bottom track of the wardrobe. The top track had a fall of approximately 4mm across its 2.4 metre length — sloping downward from left to right. The bottom track had a similar fall in the same direction. The wardrobe had been installed on a bedroom floor that was not perfectly level — a 4mm variation over 2.4 metres is within normal construction tolerance — but the tracks had been fixed directly to the floor and the wardrobe top without shimming to correct the level. Both tracks ran downhill from left to right. The door panels, which roll on tracks, were sitting on a slight incline. When a door panel was released in the closed position, gravity pulled it slowly downhill — toward the right, in the open direction. The roller tension adjustment compensated for a period, but as the rollers themselves bedded in and the adjustment settled, the underlying incline reasserted and the drift resumed. Replacing the rollers had replaced the adjustment mechanism but not corrected the incline — the new rollers drifted for the same reason the original ones had.
The correct installation requires levelling the tracks horizontally using shims or packers between the track and the substrate before fixing, so that the roller runs on a level plane regardless of the floor or ceiling variation below and above. A sliding door on a level track has no gravitational preference for one direction over another. A sliding door on an inclined track will always drift downhill unless the roller tension counteracts the gravitational component — and roller tension is an adjustment mechanism designed for fine-tuning, not for counteracting a structural incline. Remediation required removing the wardrobe top cornice, unfixing the top track, shimming and relevelling it, refixing, reinstating the cornice, and adjusting the rollers. Bottom track: same process through the skirting. Total: RM2,100. The wardrobe had been installed on an inclined track from day one. The five months before drifting appeared was the period during which the initial roller tension — fresh from the factory — was sufficient to hold the doors against the incline before it wore in and settled to the neutral tension that the incline then overcame.
Sliding wardrobe doors must be installed on level tracks — horizontally level across the full run, regardless of floor or ceiling variation. The floor and ceiling of a newly constructed or renovated room may have height variation within standard tolerance that is not visible to the eye but is measurable with a spirit level. This variation must be corrected at the track installation stage using shims or packers so the track runs level. A track that is fixed directly to a non-level substrate will run on the same incline as the substrate. Sliding doors on an inclined track will drift downhill. Roller adjustment can compensate for this temporarily, but it is not a structural solution — it compensates for but does not remove the incline. The long-term outcome is doors that drift, require periodic adjustment, wear their rollers unevenly, and eventually require track relevelling to correct permanently.
